Easy Steps for China Adoptions

Many have asked my husband and me about the details of
adopting from China since we adopted a beautiful little
girl from there three years ago. The process is easy,
if you do the following steps.
Find someone to represent you who has experience dealing
with international adoptions in general, and Chinese
adoptions in particular. We chose an agency that had a
local representative and a China representative in
addition to their national offices.
There is a lot of paperwork you must collate before
applying. Keep it organized. Not only will you use these
documents in your dossier, you will also need them when
you travel overseas to get your baby.
Once you send the dossier, use the next six months to
organize your nursery, childproof your house, arrange
for a pediatrician, and get the recommended immunizations.
After being notified of your match with a child, quickly
apply for a visa from the nearest Chinese consulate. Also
have your doctor write prescriptions for antibiotics in
the event you or the baby need them. Have the
prescriptions filled before travelling along with those
for any other necessary medications.
Currency exchange can be handled in China. The hotels
that you will be staying at in the provinces you'll be
traveling to will usually have an exchange facility.
You will need cash for some of your expenses, and it
will be a substantial amount, so a money belt is strongly
recommended.
Pack lightly. Other than clothing and antibiotics, most
of what your child will need is readily available in
China. Be sure to pack gifts for all of the officials you
deal with; this is a time-honored custom there. Gifts
which are not made or available in China are most
recommended.
When you come back to the States, look into getting a
home-state birth certificate for your child. These are
inexpensive to obtain. Contact an immigration attorney
for details.
Beyond that, all I've ever had to do is love my daughter
and accept the abundance of affection, love, and joy she
offers in return!
